Independent Medical Examinations (IME)
Psychological Disability and Occupational Evaluations
When to Request a Psychological IME
Psychological IMEs are appropriate in a range of legal, occupational, and disability matters, including:
Insurance and disability claims requiring independent evaluation of reported psychological symptoms
Occupational matters, including Fitness-for-Duty evaluations and return-to-work assessments
Attorney-retained IMEs in VA disability appeals
Legal proceedings involving questions of psychological injury or functional impairment
The Evaluation Process
Each examination is structured around specific referral questions. The process typically includes review of records provided by the retaining party, comprehensive clinical interview, standardized psychological testing when indicated, and assessment of response validity. A written report is prepared addressing the referral questions directly and supported by clinical findings. Examinations are conducted in accordance with professional forensic standards and ethical guidelines. No therapeutic relationship is established, and findings are reported to the retaining party.
A written engagement agreement is required prior to scheduling. Referral questions, relevant records, and billing arrangements must be finalized before the examination date is confirmed.
