FMLA, Short-Term Disability & FERS Retirement Evaluations

FMLA Evaluations

If mental health symptoms are interfering with your ability to work, an FMLA evaluation may be appropriate. FMLA provides unpaid, job-protected leave when a qualifying medical condition significantly impairs functioning.

The evaluation includes discussion of your symptoms and their impact on work performance. When clinical criteria are met, certification forms are completed to document eligibility for leave.

Intermittent FMLA may be appropriate when symptoms flare unpredictably and periodically interfere with work duties.

Continuous FMLA may be appropriate if your symptoms have become severe enough to require an extended, uninterrupted period away from work.

Short-Term Disability Evaluations

If a mental health condition is limiting your ability to work, short-term disability provides paid leave during a temporary period of impairment. Unlike FMLA, which protects your job but is unpaid, short-term disability replaces a portion of your income while you are away from work.

The evaluation includes diagnostic clarification and assessment of temporary functional impairment affecting work capacity. When clinical criteria are met, a structured report is provided and required employer or insurer forms are completed to document current limitations and anticipated duration of leave.

Federal Employee Disability Retirement (FERS) Evaluations

Federal disability retirement under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) applies when a medical condition is expected to prevent a federal employee from performing one or more essential job duties for at least 12 months.

The evaluation includes diagnostic clarification, review of relevant medical records, and detailed analysis of functional impairment as it relates to essential job requirements. When clinical criteria are met, a structured report is provided outlining diagnosis, work-related limitations, and anticipated duration in accordance with OPM standards.
